A completely original style
In all likelihood the building was designed to be an oratory and its construction was begun in the second half of the 1700s by the Nuns of Santa Teresa. However, the Napoleonic confiscation of the convents’ assets, prevented their completion and consecration.
Its subsequent use as a dairy is believed to have been the work of the local people, who have always been jealous custodians of theancient tradition of Parmigiano Reggiano PDO production.
It became the property of Duchess Maria Luigia of Parma, wife of Napoleon and daughter of Emperor Francis I, and in 1858 the building underwent renovation that recovered the body of the building and the neo-Gothic style of the facades, the hallmark of its originality today.
